Urinary problems are commonly seen in dogs and cats. Symptoms can range from “significantly ill” to very few signs, depending on the length and severity of the infection. Familiarity with possible warning signs can help save your pet’s life.

Urinary tract infections are classified as “upper” or “lower”. A kidney infection is an upper urinary tract infection, a bladder and urethral infection is a lower urinary tract infection.

The following clinical signs may be seen with pyelonephritis, urinary tract infections, urinary stones (bladder stones), prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate or infection), and some urinary tract cancers. Any combination of signs can be seen.

  • unable to urinate
  • strain to urinate – before, during or after urination (can be misinterpreted as constipation )
  • painful urination, whining
  • bloody urine
  • hated urine
  • urina me re
  • “urinary accidents” or urination from litterbox for cats
  • urinary incontinence (dribbling, sleep leaks)
  • drinking and urinating more often than usual
  • painful abdomen (abdominal area)
  • Excessive movement of the genital area
  • letargjik
  • not eating, appetite decreases
  • vomiting and / or diarrhea

It may be tempting to write down symptoms such as inappropriate urination as “bad” behavior , but medical problems should always be ruled out first. Urinary problems can quickly become (within hours) a life-threatening medical emergency if the animal becomes trapped.

Attention and prompt care are essential.

Important Note: Please call your veterinarian immediately if your pet shows any of these signs. Time is of the essence – urinary blockages and infections can quickly become life threatening!
