The rabies vaccine reaction can cause serious problems, but any vaccine has the potential to cause a reaction. This occurs when some dogs’s immune systems are overloaded and unable to adequately deal with the vaccine.

The vaccine reaction can come from the disease itself – in other words, the amount of virus or bacteria in the inoculation causes disease instead of preventing it. Vaccine failure, on the other hand, refers to vaccination that is unable to defend against the challenge — exposure to the agent it must defend against.
Other times the reaction may arise from helpers in the vaccine designed to stimulate the immune system response.
Immediate reactions are things you can see immediately or within a day of getting the vaccine.
- anaphylaxis
- Swelling of the face
- Difficulty breathing
- urticaria
There is no first aid for the vaccination response. Consider this an emergency and get your dog to the veteran right away , even if it is a mild reaction. This way your veterinarian can record it in his / her records to be aware of future vaccinations and also report it to the vaccine manufacturer and the federal supervisory body. Remind your vet of the future of his reaction, and especially, any vet who is not your regular self knows about the reaction.
Will he react again?
If your puppy suffered a mild reaction, your veterinarian should advise you on future vaccination protocols . In general, there are three possible scenarios with subsequent vaccinations:
- Nothing will happen.
- He will have the same reaction.
- He could have had a worse reaction like life-threatening anaphylaxis.
Killing is just the vaccine that is legally required and should be given by a veterinarian. If your dog has had a reaction to a rabies vaccine, you can ask your veteran to write a letter stating that your dog has the potential for a life-threatening reaction to another dose of the vaccine.
It is up to the governing bodies in your area whether they will exclude your dog or not.
Signs of Delayed Reaction
Each vaccination may have specific signs of reactions. There are severe reactions (Type I) that usually occur within hours after a few days after vaccination, and also delay both medical and behavioral reactions.
Delayed reactions are not so clear. This is because they can start within a week but can last much longer. Other times they show up just weeks later. These delayed reactions remain questionable whether there is a direct link to the rabies vaccine. Ordinary ordinary veterinarians including Dr. Linda Breitman would like a more directly scientifically established cause. Holistic veterinarians like Dr. Jean Dodds believe that there is a direct link between vaccination and a variety of medical and behavioral problems, listed below.
