Rhodesian Ridgeback History:
Rhodesian ridgeback developed in South Africa. Their European forefathers can be traced to the early pioneers of Cape colony of South Africa, who crossed their dogs with the semi-domestic ridged hunting dogs.
Khoikhoi people who occupied Cape Peninsula, when they started trading with the Dutch area during the 17th century, had a hunting dog which was really ugly to look at. But this dog was noted for his ferocity when acting as a guard dog. The Rhodesian Ridgeback measures18 inches at the withers with a lean but muscular frame. Their ears have been described both as erect and hanging, but the distinctive feature was the length of hair growing in the reverse direction along its back.
Till the time of 1860’s, many European settlers brought a variety of dog breeds to Africa that included Great Danes, Bloodhounds, Grey Hounds and Terriers. These dogs were bred with the African dogs including the dog of Khoikhoi people which resulted in Boar Hunting Dogs, the modern name is Rhodesian Ridgeback.
