If you drive at all in Dubai then you’ll be more than familiar with the Salik toll system by now.

Every time a vehicle passes through one of the 10 toll gates dotted around the emirate’s busiest roads you’re automatically charged Dhs4.

But that has now changed as a new dynamic pricing structure has been introduced.

Announced in November 2024 by the Roads and Transport Authority of Dubai, there is now a flexible pricing structure at every gate.

The variable pricing aims to improve traffic flow on busy Dubai roads and has been officially introduced from Friday January 31 following a release by Salik the Dubai Financial Market website.

Instead of paying Dhs4 every time you pass through, the amount you pay will vary depending on the time of day you’re driving.

It means that if you’re a *very* early riser (or on the late night shift) then you won’t face any charges at all between 1am and 6am.

But if you pass through a gate even a minute after 6am then you now face a charge of Dhs6 – a hike from the previous price.

This higher Dhs6 charge is in place at peak traffic times when much of Dubai’s population is commuting between 6am and 10am and from 4pm until 8pm.

The previous standard Dhs4 price remains in place between 10am and 4pm, 8pm and 1am and all-day on Sunday.

Dynamic Salik pricing has been in the pipeline since January of 2024, with the RTA posting on X (formerly Twitter) that flexible rates were an option under consideration to tackle congestion.

Traffic peaks in the morning and in the early evening when people are commuting to and from work.

Salik toll gates are in place at 10 of the most heavily congested roads in Dubai including Business Bay, Jebel Ali and Al Safa.

In November 2024, two new gates were added in the city at Al Khail Road at the Business Bay Crossing and Al Safa South on Sheikh Zayed Road.
